Mann Library has three GPS (global positioning system) units available for loan to Cornell students, faculty, and staff. Click headings below to learn more.
- Garmin GPS units (one Map76CS and one Map76CSx) have a variety of advanced functions including color "moving map" displays. Data can be transferred to and from both units via USB or Serial connection. The 76CSx also has a microSD card/slot.
- BGT-31 data logger can record (manually or automatically) location and speed data to internal flash memory or SD/MMC card. USB and Bluetooth connectivity offer options for tethering/transmitting/logging data directly to PDAs, phones, and laptops as well. Simple LCD display for viewing menus, heading, location (coordinates), altitude and speed (no map display on unit).
GPS use policies and procedures:
- The maximum loan period for the GPS units is four days.
- You may check availability from the equipment page, and request a reservation by submitting a reservation form.
- Only Cornell students, faculty, and staff may borrow the unit.
- Borrowers may (but are not required to) schedule a brief orientation to using the GPS units, when support staff are available and units are not checked out. Contact Jeff Piestrak jmp36@cornell.edu for more information.
- All data is erased after each use, so be sure to download data before returning.
- Specialized software and drivers are required for proper connectivity. They are installed on the classroom computers at Mann Library. You may also install on your own computer if desired. USB cables for connecting GPS units to a computer comes with each unit.
- Overdue fines are $2.00 per item per day. Each item (e.g. GPS unit, batteries, USB cable, and documentation) is a separate item.
- If the unit is lost or stolen, the borrower will be charged the replacement cost for each piece.
