Mann Library GPS Units

Mann Library has one Garmin Map76CS and one Map76CSx GPS (global positioning system) unit available for the use of Cornell students, faculty, and staff.

Please note: These units are provided with only minimal "base layer" maps, and are not suitable as navigation devices as is. Their primary purpose for our patrons is to record data points for research purposes.

Garmin Map76CS features:

  • WAAS-enabled, 12 parallel channel GPS receiver
  • Built-in quad-helix antenna
  • Electronic compass
  • Barometric sensor
  • Elevation computer
  • USB connectivity
  • Position formats include Lat/Lon, UTM, Loran TDs, and more
  • Trip computer (odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, more)

Garmin Map76CSx features:

  • High-sensitivity WAAS-capable GPS receiver by SiRF (better reception in heavy vegetation, deep canyons and urban areas)
  • Built-in quad-helix antenna
  • Electronic compass
  • Barometric sensor
  • Elevation computer
  • USB connectivity
  • Position formats include Lat/Lon, UTM, Loran TDs, and more
  • Trip computer (odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, more)

GPS use policies and procedures:

  • The maximum loan period for the GPS units is four days.
  • You may check availability from the equipment page, and request a reservation by submitting a reservation form.
  • Only Cornell students, faculty, and staff may borrow the unit.
  • Borrowers may (but are not required to) schedule a brief orientation to using the GPS units, when support staff are available and units are not checked out. Contact Jeff Piestrak jmp36@cornell.edu for more information.
  • Units are circulated with one set of fully recharged batteries. This should be sufficient for most users, but if you're planning to use the unit heavily, you may want to consider bringing an extra set of disposable batteries as a back up. Changing from rechargeable to disposable batteries requires changing the GPS unit configuration; see the quick guide for instructions.
  • Library staff will erase all data after each use, but see the quick guide for information if you wish to erase data yourself.
  • DNR Garmin, or Garmin's MapSource software, is required to download data from the GPS. Both are installed on the classroom computers at Mann Library. A USB cable for connecting the GPS unit to a computer comes with the unit. See the quick guide for instructions on how to download data. Do not attempt to download data without one of these software packages.
  • Overdue fines are $2.00 per item per day. Each item (GPS unit, batteries, USB cable, and documentation) is a separate item.
  • If the unit is lost or stolen, the borrower will be charged the replacement cost for each piece.
